This massive 40ft statue confused me a bit. Who is the giant woman holding Jesus meant to be? Any ideas? And why is she a giant???? :( confused :/

    This is a (rough!) copy of Michelangelo's "Pieta" in St Peter's, Rome - Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the crucifixion. The original is an amazing piece of sculpture. (Have a look on Google at the real thing!)
